Performer:John Roache
Composer:Bix Beiderbecke
Arranged by:John Roache

Here is legendary jazz cornetist " Bix " Beiderbecke's 1928 solo piano masterpiece. It is a fine example of the novelty "Modern Piano Solos" which were so popular during that era.

Although Bix was probably always thought of as a cornet player, this piece, one of four piano solos he wrote, is probably his best known work. It contains all the elements of Novelty Piano - the consecutive fourths and chromaticism - plus he breaks some new ground into the realm of jazz chord progressions. His solo piano recording departs from the published score upon which this MIDI sequence is based. Bix's recording is available as a RealAudio sound file from The Red Hot Jazz Archive. I suggest you listen to it.

For further information on the "Novelty Piano" genre, please read my multimedia presentation " What is Ragtime, Stride and Novelty Piano? ".

This performance is dedicated to Patrick Gogerty, a good friend and great pianist who recently passed away. Pat's sensitive interpretation of "In A Mist" was my favorite piece in his vast repertoire. "This one's for you Pat"
