It answered questions that I didn't even know that I had!! Is it likely that pictures exist of some of these composers? I was searching for some ragtime to play for my AP US History class (I like to find music from the various eras we study to give my students a feel for the texture of the life the people of that time experienced). Comments about the web site: This is one of the best sites through out all the sites I've been. I play the piano and would like to be able play rag time music without getting people around bored. But my technic is not sufficient. I'm not bad at all. But still am not satisfied with myself. Do you have any suggestions so that I can show some improvement if I follow. I know exercise will help as far as it can but which one or what way I should perform is not clear for me. I'm not sure whether there are different exercises for rag time music. I need advice. By the way why don't you add a wav file, even a picture of your self, I think this would make the site even warmer.Thanks. Tuna Erkmen

Also can you help me with e mail addresses for Paul Johnson and Mike Schwimmer? I need their help in doing some research on contemporary ragtime on piano rolls. Despite my age, I simply love all those old piano favourites, especially Scott Joplin, Fats Waller, etc. This site is one of the most professional I have ever visited, and the midi sequences therein are superb quality. Thank you - they have given me a lot of pleasure. For everyone's sake, let's hope somebody smart makes a machine to stretch the old left hand a couple of centimetres, just to make those ten note strides a bit less painful! Comments about the web site: John, I have compiled a list of 72 "contemporary rags",i.e. written since 1960 and have gotten into a grey area. Would Robin's "Alligator Gravy","Hard Luck Lulu","Smoke and Mirrors", and "Stepped Up Syncopation" be considered rags? Rags in the sense there are 3 or more sections of syncopated music. Evidently John Farrell does not think so but I have included them in my list anyway. I don't know how to put the list into my email system yet or I would send you the file that will be part of my symposium at the Lake Superior Ragtime Bash this weekend. Leaving early Thursday morning so if you cannot get the reply to me by then send it to Tim Sandor, tsandor@computerpro.com

hi john, I'm absolutely delighted to find your site. I've loved ragtime music for years. Like some of your guest must agree, it's terribly difficult to find good ragtime recordings by good piano players. The kids that stock the shelves in stores don't seem to know where ragtime goes, so I find it in every catagory of music. I've spent hours and hours going through cd's and tapes. I just discovered amazon lately and they do have a few recording that I don't have. I'm 55 years old and bought a piano just to learn to play ragtime. I love it. I'm not very good, but people that don't play are impressed. I love your music. I hope you continue to record and share. Its a very generous gift to people who love rags. Thank You. jerry johnson

John, It has only been a few months since we last communicated. I was shocked and saddened by the news of your passing to the Great Ragtime Home Above night before last. You will be greatly missed by myself and countless others to whom you brought the wounderful experience of your MIDI ragtime. As you know, I have all your MIDI files and CD's, which I listen to often. I realize that you no longer are burdened with any physical limitations, and are now playing ragtime with the Great Composer of the Universe. That fact, and my knowledge that you are reading this message, reduces my sadness. My deepest sympathy is here offered to your family. I will think of you EVERY TIME I hear ragtime.

Much to my dismay, I have just learned of John's passing. I have been a fan of John's since first discovering his web site back in 1993. It was his marvelous talent and love of ragtime that led me to innumerable richly rewarding musical tours of the various ragtime offerings on the internet.

To say that I was captivated by both his music and his mastery of the midi medium would be an understatement. Perhaps my favorite Roache tune is John's rendition of "Bucktown Buck". I still recall practically wearing out my sound system playing that tune over and over again. In fact, "Bucktown" has maintained an honored place on my Home Page (with John's gracious permission) for some five years now.

My deepest sympathy to the members of John's family. I can only imagine the tremendous void his passing has assuredly left in your lives. But how comforting it must be to realize that his spirit is so vividly alive and well in the legacy of his music. May God Bless You and your family John, and thanks for the wonderful musical experiences you have provided.

I just came upon this site while looking for MIDI sites. This is a terrific site. Throughtfully and creatively organized to be user friendly. After listening to many tracks of some of the best ragtime and stride performances I have heard, I re-read the Home page and learned that Dr. Roache had just passed away very recently.

I was instantly saddened at this news and I share his family's and the planet's loss of such a rare talent as his. It makes this site even more cherished. I should like to have met him. And yet I feel I have, through his Web site. A part of spirit lives here.

This Web site is truly his gift to the world - for all who love this music. His nusic. His life and love of the piano is celebrated here in a way few other memorials can ever match. Please keep this site and his CDs available, so others newly searching the web may also discover, enjoy and celebrate the passion of John Roache's life.

We know now; The Holy Spirt is a ragtime piano lover too... and brought home his best.

Your website is very boring. So boring I could fall asleep looking at it even with someone slapping me.

Love these ragtime pieces. My dad played ragtime, and from age 6 to 85 he enjoyed his piano. I grew up hearing it and loving it too. Thanks for such a nice page. Hope you will continue to have it on the web. Thanks for a lot of nice pieces to enjoy.
